This coming Saturday, November 28 marks the 6th annual Small Business Saturday (#SmallBusinessSaturday). A day created by American Express to encourage people across the country to support small, local businesses. (#ShopSmall)
Small Business Saturday was first launched in 2010 and by 2011 had quickly gained steam as the U.S. Senate voiced their support for the day by making it an officially recognized holiday. In 2012, American Express did everything in their power to help small business owners have a voice and provided free, personalized ads which appeared millions of times across the web. In response, 73.9 MILLION people went out to shop at small businesses that year.
As the day continued to grow, individuals and local organizations pledged to support Small Business Saturday as Neighborhood Champions. This amounted to over 1,450 people signed up to rally their communities on Small Business Saturday and in 2014, an estimated $14.3 BILLION was spent by 88 million consumers at small independent businesses on Small Business Saturday.
Shoppers are now supporting their neighborhood businesses like never before and are continuing to embrace the day as a holiday shopping tradition year over year.
“Small businesses power the U.S. economy. In fact, according to the SBA, they represent 54% of all domestic sales and generate approximately 40% of all retail jobs. Small businesses add vibrancy and strengthen communities, as well as their local economies.” - Robert Arora, Forbes
